Boat Anodes

Boat anodes serve to protect your vessel from damaging galvanic corrosion. There are many different materials, styles, shapes and sizes, but they are all designed to deplete first before the expensive metal parts of your vessel.

Cost can be a factor when choosing anodes, zinc anodes are low-cost and readily available from many chandleries. Slightly more expensive and hard-wearing boat anodes are made from an aluminium alloy or environmentally friendly cadmium-free anodes.

Anodes should be placed in strategic locations around your vessel, creating a complete cathodic protection system.  From the engine, hull, transom, stern drive and propulsion gear, propeller shafts and propellers.

Vessel owners should be aware of the location and condition of anodes to make inspection, maintenance and replacement easier.
Ingot suggests replacing anodes when 50% is depleted and notes boat anodes should never be painted or covered.
